The Office of Indigenous Academic and Community Engagement recognizes Elders as the foundation of Indigenous communities. They are the keepers of sacred stories, songs, language, culture and traditions. They are pivotal in protecting Indigenous ways of knowing and being that have been passed down for countless generations. The Elders’ cultural wisdom defines and informs the manner in which Indigenous people live in the modern world. Today, the University of Victoria’s (UVic) sÉ™lxÊ·éyn sqÊ·él / SELWÁN SḰÁL Elders’ Voices program includes several Indigenous Elders in the capacity of Specialist Instructors. They provide the cultural and spiritual foundation for the Office of Indigenous Academic and Community Engagement (IACE) and support relationships between this office and UVic’s executive, faculty and staff.

Dr. Jenene Burke
President of WFATE

Professor Jenene Burke is the Director Academic Operations, in the Institute of Education, Arts and Community at Federation University Australia. Jenene joined Federation University’s predecessor institution, the University of Ballarat, in 1998, after a successful career as a secondary teacher. She is the former Chair of the Higher Education Curriculum Committee at Federation, Deputy Dean, and Associate Dean (Teaching Quality) in the School of Education, and Associate Dean (Learning and Teaching) in the Faculty of Education and Arts.

Jenene is the President of the World Federation of Associations for Teacher Education (WFATE) and Board Member representing Australia. She leads the WFATE ‘Inclusion and Social Justice in Teacher Education in Global Contexts’ research development group. She was an Ordinary Member of the Australian Teacher Education Association (ATEA) executive (2014-2019), National Convenor of the ATEA awards and grants (2015-2019) and Victorian representative, Network of Associate Deans of Learning and Teaching in Education (NADLATE) executive.

Jenene grew up in rural Victoria in Australia and is proud to claim that she has spent her academic career in a regional university. Along with her world-class research into play spaces as inclusive environments for children and their families, Jenene has broad interest in other areas of education which intersect with disability studies, inclusive education, and teacher education in and for rural communities, as demonstrated in her research activities.  

Dr. Vanessa de Oliveira Andreotti
Dean of the Faculty of Education

 Vanessa de Oliveira Andreotti has joined UVic as the Dean of the Faculty of Education. She started her career as an educator as a school teacher in Brazil and, as an educational researcher and teacher educator, has led educational programs in the UK, Republic of Ireland, Aotearoa/New Zealand, Finland and Canada. Dr. Andreotti is former Canada Research Chair in Race, Inequalities and Global Change, a former David Lam Chair in (critical) Multicultural Education and a former Chair in Global Education.  Her research problematizes and offers alternatives to approaches to education and global change that reproduce paternalistic forms of relationships; simplistic solutions to complex problems; and ethnocentric ideals of sustainability, equity, justice, and change. She has extensive experience working across sectors internationally, particularly in areas related to global justice, global citizenship, internationalization, climate change and Indigenous and community engagement. Her scholarship examines the interface between historical, systemic and on-going forms of violence, and how these mobilize global imaginaries that limit or enable different possibilities for (co)existence.
